  61. A few digests ago, I posted an item complaining about the harpsichord
  62. patch, which had a horrible metallic noise to it.
  63.  
  64. Someone (Mike Batchelor?) responded that it was supposed to sound
  65. like that. Now I know what a harpsichord is supposed to sound like,
  66. and thought that Mike could not possibly be listening to the same
  67. sound as me.
  68.  
  69. So... Thought I'd experiment with the 'number of active voices' setting
  70. in Windows. I had previously bumped it up to 32 (after all the GUS has
  71. all these voices, so why not use them?). When I put it back to 14,
  72. the harpsichord was much more acceptable (so anyone who didn't believe
  73. how horrible it was before, just try 32 active voices!). Of course
  74. using only 14 voices, most .MIDs then miss out quite a few notes, or
  75. cut off notes too early. How many does DOS PLAYMIDI use? My guess is
  76. 20 (or is it 24 - I can't remember) from using the -udebug option
  77. and watching the X symbols representing a note on a particualar voice.

  79. It's only through reading bits of the SDK documentation that I've
  80. come to appreciate the effect of number of active voices. As I
  81. understand it, with 14 active voices, the GUS can update each of them
  82. at 44kHz, but as the number increases, it can only update each voice
  83. less frequently. If the patch sample is recorded at 44kHz (as at
  84. least some of them are), then it does this by missing out samples,
  85. and interpolating between the remaining ones. I would guess that
  86. this is more likely to degrade a patch with lots of high harmonics
  87. in it, as perhaps the harpsichord does.
  88.  
  89. I would like to see the GUS manual and help files give better assistance
  90. on this subject - there is something about using 14 voices on 386
  91. machines (why??) (mine's a 486 DX2/50 by the way), but nothing to suggest
  92. any ill effects of using more. I hate being told to use particular
  93. settings without an explanation why.

  109. I bought a GUS card (rev 2.4) two weeks back to upgrade my Soundblaster 1.5,
  110. which sounds particularly bad under Windows 3.1 playing wavs.  I am into
  111.  
  112.  
  113. MIDI and have a midi keyboard which can output on 4 channels only
  114. (1..4).  It also uses running status mode.  Ok.  I made up a Midi
  115. interface for the SB Midi port a year ago and it has worked fine for both
  116. Windows and DOS SB stuff.  I tried it on the GUS.  Input didn't work.
  117. OK, so I thought, this interface could be dodgy on the GUS, so I made the
  118. recommended interface and tried it out.  Under DOS, it worked beautifully,
  119. both In and Out.  I was using a program for testing Midi called
  120. MIDITEST.EXE.  This program is available on archive.epas.utoronto.ca.
  121. It is interrupt driven for input (I have read the code) and I used IRQ 5
  122. for the GUS Midi interrupt number.
  123.  
  124. Now Windows 3.1  
  125. I have tested the CakeWalk demo and WinJammr (which work with my SB MIDI).
  126. When using both these programs with the GUS midi port as the selected
  127. input device, I can get midi output working fine, as well as the GUS
  128. Synth but I CANNOT get midi input working at all!  Nothing happens
  129. when I record.  I have also tried a program called MIDVUE.EXE (from
  130. EPAS)  and this shows all the midi input bytes coming from the SB port,
  131. but nothing at all when the GUS midi input is selected. (Yes I swapped
  132. the cables!) Also the Patch Manager does not echo the midi through to the 
  133. GUS synth (both with and without Midi Thru selected).  Because the DOS midi 
  134. input works I know the hardware to be OK.  So I thought it must be either...
  135.  
  136. 1) incorrect Windows setup in system.ini    or
  137. 2) dud Windows GUS midi driver.
  138.  
  139. I reinstalled the original GUS s/w (vers. 2.05) onto my machine. No
  140. difference.  I tried many combinations of IRQs and removed all
  141. references to the SB drivers as well as removing the SB itself. No
  142. difference.  I checked that the correct driver file was in the windows/system
  143. directory  (ultmport.drv was there OK).  I checked that my Windows
  144. system.ini file had matching setup info to my autoexec.bat file GUS
  145. variable.  Irq 5 for MIDI int, Irq 11 for GF1 int, base port 240h,
  146. all DMA etc, everything matched fine.  
  147.  
  148. I also wrote a Borland Pascal program which would echo midi commands from
  149. an input device to the GUS synth.  It worked fine when the SB midi input
  150. device was used but nothing happens for the GUS input midi device.  I
  151. traced the windows messages being passed and found that no MM_MIM_DATA
  152. message is generated when the GUS midi input is used.  But it does for
  153. the SB. Arrghh!  Maybe the interrupt is not being processed?
  154.  
  155. What's wrong!?

  157. I thought the midi driver must be dud so I downloaded the new GUS
  158. install disks (ver 2.06) from EPAS and re-installed.  I was disappointed
  159. to find that the same Windows drivers are supplied, and you guessed it..
  160. they didn't work either.

  162. I have exhausted all avenues, so it seems, and am just about fed up
  163. completely with the damned thing.  PLEASE somebody let me know if/how they
  164. have the Windows driver for the GUS midi input port succesfully
  165. working with a midi device.  Without knowing this, I almost believe that
  166.

  168. the Windows midi driver from Gravis simply doesn't work.

  260. I've been waiting patiently for my upgrade disks (I've had my GUS since last
  261. December, registered it very soon thereafter), and nothing has arrived yet
  262. (this is from Portland, Oregon).

  264. Based on some comments in 6/21's digest, I called Gravis ((800)663-8558, and
  265. just hang on the line) and verified they never received my registration card
  266. either.  Turns out there is a possibility lots of registration cards were
  267. lost due to their address change last November; if you bought a card with old
  268. addresses on the registration card (I guess I did), then the mail system may
  269. not have forwarded you card to the new address.  After some venting (I'm
  270. really pissed about this), I got the info:
  271.  
  272. Send a letter asserting your registration was lost, and include your receipt
  273. for your GUS and/or a xerox of the UPC codes from the box to:

  286. It isn't *my* fault that Gravis moved and lost my registration card.  This
  287. situation makes me angry; the card would have be largely useless these past 6
  288. months if I didn't have ftp access to the internet, and now I don't even
  289. receive the upgrade disks I'm entitled to without more fuss on my part and
  290. more waiting (likely a month or so).  If I didn't expect so much good to come
  291. from support for the card I'd sell it and buy an (ugh) SB-something.

  304. can now play games with sound in an OS/2 2.1 Dos session.

  323. Media player, at least, will play the thing.  don't know if it drops anything

  325. playmidi sends all sorts of debug messages about needing room for 1 wave,
  326. while it plays the thing.

  329. doing auto-notating dies with a General Protection Fault in module user.exe

  415. archive.epas site for all the GUS software.  We're trying to get all
  416. the ftp sites organized together, so Thomas Wong and I thought we
  417. would start a small, low-volume mailing list for the people running
  418. these mirror sites, or people running ftp-by-mail sites for
  419. archive.epas.

  421.     If you are interested in working with us, please respond to me
  422. (ddebry@dsd.es.com) directly, and I'll put you on the list.

  453. I sent my card to Logitech in Switzerland, and I got my upgrade disks
  454. about two weeks ago (Way to go Gravis!) here in Sweden. The box was sent
  455. from Amsterdam (as a couple of other fellow europeans have stated earlier)
  456. so I guess you should try to contact Gravis to check if they've recieved
  457. your registration card or not.

  459. Note to John Smith: In case you read about my 7, oh 8 re-installations
  460. ------------------  of the v2.01 disks just to get the SETGUS.EXE to work
  461.                     in earlier digests - v2.06 is no different. It still
  462.                     won't run. Ye olde v1.22 setup program still runs fine
  463.                     though (when using that old version (yup, I have to
  464.                     have two autoexec/config + two ultrasound software
  465.                     versions on my HD))... And I've also yet to see a
  466.                     reply from you about this problem. That's the only let-
  467.                     down I've experienced w/Gravis..

  483. Well, just got off calling Oregon to grab those AIL/MIDPAK/DIGPAK driver
  484. for the GUS(ULTRAMID).  And I just finished testing it out in the only game
  485. I have the supports the *.ADV standard, The 7th Guest.  Boy was I surprised
  486. that it actually worked! :)  I tested it out on DOS, and it sounded wonderful,
  487. I'm gonna try with the '-c' paramater, to see if it can speed it up along.
  488.  
  489. Anyways, on to the meat of the post.  The UltraMID drivers *WORKS* with
  490. OS/2 2.1!  Finally, I won't have to sell my GUS(And to think, I was 
  491. contemplating on trading it in for a PUS-16. <g>)
  492. Not to mention that it sounds a heck of a lot better than SBOS ever will.
  493.  
  494. P.S. UltraMID worked under OS/2 2.1 with The 7th Guest, running off of
  495. a Texel DM3024 w/ Trantor SCSI adapter.  Your mileage might vary.

  498. But I'm pretty sure it should work with most everything the README file
  499. stated.

  501. P.P.S.  A BIG Thanks goes to Gravis for continually supporting us *old* 
  502. customers.  I personally haven't met a company that gives out so much
  503. free stuff from a $130 product.  (Hell, I've recieved more free stuff
  504. from Gravis, than my brother has with Honda!  And his toy cost $16,000!)

  519. are currently at V0.96 and are still in Beta.  We have been using them
  520. for well over a month and should have worked out all major bugs.  What

  531.  The Audio Interface Libraries (AIL), (we know them as "Miles" Drivers)
  532.  and DIGPAK are a set of interface drivers which enable software
  533.  developers (mainly game developers) to integrate sound capabilities
  534.  into their programs.  Once a developer has integrated his program into
  535.  the AIL drivers the application will work with all sound cards on the
  536.  market who provide AIL drivers. The AIL's provide support for MIDI as
  537.  well as the Digital Sound interface of an audio card. These library
  538.  drivers allow the developers to use UltraSound's wavetable synthesizer
  539.  and allow them to utilize the UltraSound's digital interface to play 8
  540.  or 16 bit audio in either mono or stereo mode.

  542.  Advanced Gravis & FORTE have recently designed and released to Miles
  543.  Design and The Audio Solution Inc. the AIL and DIGPAK routines for the
  544.  UltraSound card which provide the mechanism for developers to easily
  545.  intergrate with, and use UltraSound's features.  Developers who have
  546.  the AIL's and/or DIGPAK can get the driver updates and intergrate
  547.  their programs into the UltraSound.  The AIL/DIGPAK updates will also
  548.  be available through the Advaced Gravis BBS or any of our nodes.

  559.  Resident (TSR) utility called UltraMID.  Developers utilizing this
  560.  TSR are able to do digital playback at 8 or 16 bits up to 44.1kHz
  561.  sample rate.  Also, this allows programmers to use all of the
  562.  UltraSound's 32 digital voices as well as the superior wavetable
  563.  synthesizer.

  602. I've just tested AIL onto T2029, it WORKS perfectly at the introductions!
  603. But I am not too sure if there is any music during the missio, I heard 
  604. digital effects, but they are not so clear. Anyway I even tried to set the
  605. soundcard setting to SoundBlaster and Roland. The sound with SB setting only,

  893. I have just upgraded my GUS to 1 meg and installed the latest upgrades (2.06)
  894. which I received in the post last week. I ran the new playfile.exe and
  895. while the new interface isn't great, it's far better than the command line
  896. playfile of old. So I hooked up my CD player to theline in, enabled it on
  897. the panel, chosse the 44.1 kHz and stereo options and sampled a few seconds
  898. of one of my CD's (a verse and chorus of a song). When I went back to play it
  899. out, there were 'skips' in my sample file, that is the sample would jump from
  900. one point to the next, omitting pieces of the song... what the **** is the deal
  901. here? This is one of the two reasons I got this and if sampling doesn't work
  902. on this card correctly, it is fairly useless in the long run to me!
  903. If I am missing some obvious point, please, by all means, point it out and make me look like a fool, but please, let me know how to fix this!!!

  1175. Well, then you'd be stuck.  When I set up my new Maxtor 245mb drive, I
  1176. used 205mb as my compressed drive.  I've got just the SBOS (and ultrinit)
  1177. directory from the new distribution on the uncompressed drive, with the full
  1178. Ultrasnd directory sitting on the compressed drive.  For games which
  1179. have memory problems on my system (POP2 won't run if I've got dubldisk
  1180. loaded), I have a clean boot disk which I use for playing POP2.  It's a 
  1181. pain, but it works.

  1183. The Gravis stuff works fine with Vertisoft's DoubleDisk Gold, which is 
  1184. practically the same as Micro$oft DoubleSpace - excepting the fact that
  1185. DoubleDisk seems to be more bulletproof...

  1225. I'm using DoubleSpace as well, and X-wing runs nearly flawlessly with
  1226. SBOS 1.20.  The digital speech only drops out on the rare occasion,
  1227. and the slow-downs when I fire my lasers or a TIE zooms by are eliminated
  1228. by turning the music off.

  1253. interrupt.  This is making SBOS unhappy.  Unload the second TSR 
  1254. first, then SBOS.  Or load SBOS last.  It may be that the game 
  1255. you just ran SBOS with has altered the interrupt vectors, and 
  1256. not restored them when it finished.  This is a PROGRAMMING ERROR 
  1257. - a big one, too.  You'd have to reboot the system to recover 
  1258. from it if that is the case.  Report the bug to the game 
  1259. publisher, it is an inexcusable omission for them to leave the 
  1260. interrupt vectors in disarry.

  1307. megs in a month. But anyways, this archive is growing way faster than
  1308. anyone was able to predict. And the amount of room Adam can gratiously
  1309. contribute on archive.epas.utoronto.ca is fast reaching its limits. Even
  1310. at the very beginning, epas wasn't meant to be a huge archive and we've
  1311. already had plans on how we'd split the load once I was able to get
  1312. access to wuarchive. We just didn't expect that day to come this fast. I
  1313. was looking at a couple of years before we hit the limit, not a couple
  1314. of months. So anyways, we are now faced with this question now. So here
  1315. is what we would do .... subject to change if need be of course....

  1435. One limitation that the gus does seem to have compared with a proper sampler
  1436. is that it doesnt accept system exclusive sample dump messages ( or any
  1437. other sort of sysex )

  1439. The current state of play with the available patch making programs are that
  1440. they have 'trouble' with patches over 64k & certainly cant make patches over
  1441. 256k that are 16 bit.  In other words wierdo restrictions are in place,
  1442. watch out.

  1445. single stereo record like DigiVox's Sound Impression or Digital Soup, so its

  1557.   SOLUTION: Set the GUS address to 220h.

  1559.   After changing the address jumpers and editing my AUTOEXEC.BAT and
  1560.   CONFIG.SYS to specify 220h as the GUS address for ULTRAINIT and the
  1561.   Soundblaster variables, I rebooted my PC to make the changes take
  1562.   effect.  (As a side note, I also had to change my SCSI card address
  1563.   because it conflicted with the 220h address.)  Then I went into the
  1564.   X-Wing "INSTALL" program to change the sound card setting to
  1565.   Soundblaster mode, and viola'!  I got music *and* digitized sound
  1566.   effects!  Happy, happy, joy, joy!
